It appears that Diego Sanchez’s “”MMA Math” has added up into a title shot for the former Ultimate Fighter season 1 contestant and he will in fact get the next title shot in the Lightweight division.
Yahoo! Sports Kevin Iole reported in his latest MMA Mailbag that Sanchez will in fact face the winner of the BJ Penn vs Kenny Florian championship bout at UFC 101: Declaration.
“Diego will get the next title shot against the winner of the B.J. Penn-Kenny Florian fight at UFC 101 on Aug. 8 in Philadelphia. While I agree with you that Maynard is deserving, Sanchez is a former “Ultimate Fighter” winner and is 10-2 in the UFC, not counting his wins on TUF 1. While I wouldn’t be opposed to having Maynard and Sanchez fight and seeing that winner get the title shot, I believe Sanchez has won enough fights and waited a long enough time to deserve the next chance.”
While there is no official report from the UFC, I would take this as official. Lightweight Gray Maynard would be the only other possible contender, but Dana White confirmed the other day that Gray Maynard will face off against Roger Huerta. Which removed the Xtreme Couture trained Lightweight from the title mix for the foreseeable future.
Now it appears that Diego Sanchez’s trash talk about Kenny Florian and BJ Penn will finally pay off as he gets closer to facing one of them in the Octagon.
